Abstract

Patients normally expect a fair treatment by the doctors. The doctors also need to be unbiased in treating the patients. Doctors strongly feel that the loyalty factor amongst the patients is declining due to more affordability, long waiting hours with the specific doctor, lack of patience in the younger generation, lack of trust, and also due to unavoidable circumstances like geographical barriers and time constraints. Doctors may have to spend different amount of time with different types of patients due to the type of the sickness, severity, and complications. Some patients may feel that doctors do not pay equal attention to all the patients. This is to say that the treatment by the doctors does not only comprise of administering the medicines but also involves satisfying the communication gap, interpersonal relationship, counselling and education regarding the disease. The communication gap that arises due to multiple factors also creates a situation of unequal exchange. There are certain intangibles such as culture and values and tangibles such as status and wealth of the patients which certainly impact doctorpatient relationship. Doctor-patient connection is one of the highest forms of human relationships. The human relationship that binds faith, trust, confidence, support, and respect becomes the core of the equal treatment to patients. The awareness of the human limitation is vital in encompassing any relationship in general and doctor-patient relationship in particular.

Abstract

Training and Development being one of the core techniques of Human Resource Development is the vital tool that contributes to the development of competencies in commercial banks. For carrying out a micro and in-depth study on training and employee development in commercial banks, sample of three main commercial banks have been selected from Dakshina Kannada District of Karnataka State, as the locale of the study. The banks selected are Karnataka Bank Ltd. in the private sector, Corporation Bank in the public sector both originating from Dakshina Kannada district and under new generation banking sector the sole ICICI bank branch that is functioning in Dakshina Kannada district were selected.

This research aims to understand the attitude and work performance of employees of commercial banks after undergoing training. Apart from understanding the effectiveness of training programmes the study also aims to identify the magnitude of training needs of employees at different levels in commercial banks under study. The study has identified some flaws in the training system of these commercial banks suggests measures to improve the existing training practices in banks. Training should receive the maximum support from top management at the emotional level, in such a way that training system should be involved in solving strategic organizational problems.

Abstract

To sustain and maintain the happy labour force is the challenge of the day which could effectively be dealt through one of the weapons, welfare measures. Unless people are well taken care of by the organization they may not be satisfied to stay in the organization. The study intends to find out the welfare measures at Mangalore Refinery And Petrochemicals Limited, (MRPL) Mangaluru and tries to understand employee satisfaction towards it. Welfare facilities provided by MRPL are exemplary to other organizations in general and manufacturing industries in particular. In this respect MRPL has played a very important role in extending the welfare measures and keeping the employees satisfied.

Abstract

The field of strategic human resource Management considers people as a vital and a strategic asset of an organisation thereby making a major assumption that the way an organisation performs, significantly depends upon the way people perform. The fact that human resources are considered as strategic asset invariably makes it a source of competitive advantage. To sustain this competitive advantage, it is crucial for the organisations to implement HR strategies that have a positive impact on their performance. However, the link between HR strategies and organisational performance is an under researched area. This paper, thus examines the role played by human resource strategies on an organisation's performance and thereby sustainable competitive advantage.

Abstract

Each firm has a list of competencies required and well-defined roles to perform each task efficiently. Each employee needs different competencies for different roles. If the process of mapping the competencies is not done, organisations will end up in creating human liabilities than the assets which will be catastrophically dysfunctional. The present study helps to analyse effectiveness of competency mapping in Karnataka Agencies, Mangaluru, by identifying the key competencies required for different positions in them. 7S model is applied to explore competency mapping practices of Karnataka Agencies. The competencies that are used to perform a task or job such as technical knowledge, functional information, analytical skills, communication skills, planning and organising skills, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, team building skills, problem solving skills, decision making skills, time management skills. The study revealed that creativity and negotiation skills are the most important key competencies used in Karnataka Agencies.

Abstract

Since people are the main resources in an organisation, their productivity and efficiency depends upon the work quality they are experiencing in the organisation. The basic purpose of Quality of Work Life (QWL) is to provide improved working conditions to the employees so that they contribute their best in the work in particular and organisation in general. The study tries to investigate the measures of QWL taken by Dakshina Kannada Co-operative Milk Union Ltd (DKMUL). It was observed that the DKMUL's QWL initiatives were exemplary and employees in majority have praised it. The study proposes a model of QWL that can be productively applied to DKMUL in particular and other relevant industries in general based on the findings of the study.

Abstract

Health is one of the most important elements of human development and growth. People with better awareness about their health are able to maintain a good health trajectory throughout. People with limited health literacy are more likely to make medication errors, and they have less health knowledge, worse health status, more hospitalisations, and higher healthcare costs than people with adequate literacy. An earnest effort is made to understand the health literacy levels of literate adults review the health literacy position among literate adults who are able to read and understand English in urban and rural Mangaluru with the help of REALM-Teen, REALM-SF, REALM-R and NVS health literacy tools. Health literacy scores observed among the respondents in this study were very poor. It means that most people would struggle to understand different healthcare information. By improving people's access to health information, and their capacity to use it effectively, health literacy can be improved. More interactions must take place between the healthcare workers, doctors, nurses and the general public so as to increase the awareness regarding the health in the society.

Abstract

The customer always expects a potentially great service from any business deal. The evaluation of service quality becomes quintessential in understanding the effectiveness of the service provided by the trader. Keeping this aspect in mind, a micro study was conducted to analyze the impact of service quality on customers of Cauvery Motors Pvt. Ltd., Mangaluru, by using the SERVQUAL scale. Twenty-two items that involve all five service dimensions as prescribed by Parasuraman et al. (1988) were used to understand customer perception on service quality. On the basis of service dimensions viz., Tangibles, Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance, and Empathy, the responses were found to be satisfactory to the customers. Only the tangibility factor has to be worked on as there is more gap between expectation and perception. As per the calculation of weighted scores, there exists very little difference between the customer expectations and their perception regarding the service.
